A call to arms

In the City of San Diego’s ongoing betrayal of public trust, its Land Use and Housing Committee next week could take another step toward eliminating open-space protections for 600 acres in the San Dieguito River Valley including restrictions governing use of the former polo fields.

If the committee meeting on Thursday, Oct. 9 endorses the scheme to gut or amend the Grant Deed protections, the resolution would move on to the full City Council for a vote sometime later in the month. The outcome of that vote will determine whether the City can evade the current lawsuit it faces for failing to enforce the restrictions on Surf Cup Sport’s use of the fields, and whether Surf and its multiple Florida LLCs can continue to reap vast profits from the exploitation of public land for entertainment and sports events – with ever-increasing noise, dust, and traffic gridlock impacting the surrounding communities.

The Land Use and Housing Committee meets at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, in the 12th-floor City Council Committee Room at 202 C Street, San Diego. There will be time for public comment.

Committee members Kent Lee (Chair), Sean Elo-Rivera (Vice Chair), Raul Campillo, and Vivian Moreno heard public comment condemning the City’s proposed resolution earlier this month. They and the remaining City Council members have also received over 1,000 letters in opposition to the City’s scheme to gut the Grant Deed from residents of surrounding communities, homeowners’ associations, regional planning groups, environmental organizations, and the cities of Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Escondido.

If you are unable to attend next week’s meeting, we urge you to voice your concerns by sending a written comment. The Land Use and Housing Committee accepts comments in advance of the meeting via this link: https://www.sandiego.gov/council-committees/luh-committee-public-comment-form
