FAQ

+ Has anyone talked to the city of San Diego or Surf Cup representatives about these issues?

Many neighbors have asked the City repeatedly over the past several years to curtail this deliberate disregard of the surrounding neighborhood and Grant Deed prohibitions, and have pleaded with the City to enforce the terms of the Grant Deed. The City’s Real Estate Assets Division, whose charter is to maximize revenue, stands to generate a significant windfall under the Lease, and so the requests have fallen on deaf ears. The city even maintained in an August 2017 letter that there are "no prohibitions against lighting for nighttime events, hours of operation during daylight, noise levels, amplified music or number of days of operation each year." Surf Cup and its several subsidiaries and affiliates, with annual revenue now estimated to be in excess of $3 million, has repeatedly stated it wishes to be a good neighbor, but its actions, failure to implement promised changes, and aggressive growth plans, clearly contradict its words. Youth sports is now a $15.3B industry and Surf Cup is carving out a piece of the pie. To learn more about the growth of the youth sports industry, read this TIME magazine article.

+ What is Drew Brees’ involvement with Surf Cup?

Surf Cup recently announced a partnership with Drew Brees, who invested in Surf, to help promote Surf Cup youth sports. We expect the situation will worsen further in 2020 as Surf Cup expands their operations into other sports.

+ How many people attend Surf Cup events?

Surf Cup’s own website estimates that they have 200,000 youth participants annually, 2000 college coaches/scouts, and 490,000 attendees per year.

+ Why are you against soccer? Aren’t sports good for kids?

We are not against soccer, and we believe youth sports are a good thing. However, the scope and scale of events happening at these fields not only violates the provisions of the Grant Deed, but is completely incompatible with the rural nature of the surrounding community. This area was intended to be preserved as public open space for light recreational use. This valley is not suitable for heavy use by organized club sports teams, and the infrastructure does not support its use in this way.
